本标准于１９９３年首次发布。本标准代替ＧＢ／Ｔ１４３９３—１９９３《贸易单证中代码的位置》。 本标准规定了国际贸易所用单证中单证代码标识的位置、栏目代码标识的位置以及代码型数据项的位置。本标准适用于国际贸易单证制单中的自动数据处理（ＡＤＰ）系统。 本标准与ＧＢ／Ｔ１４３９３—１９９３的主要变化为：
———增加了前言、ＩＳＯ 前言、引言；
———修改了ＧＢ／Ｔ１４３９３—１９９３中２．２．１“框式数据栏”例２和例３的部分内容（本版本的３．３．１）；
———增加了资料性附录Ａ。

国际贸易中所使用的单证通常用作自动数据处理（ＡＤＰ）系统的数据输入或从这些系统中获得数据的基础。因此单证中的信息在格式上也适合于ＡＤＰ 的需求。以代码形式表示的信息可满足这种需求，并有助于减少语言障碍。为了在阅读这些信息时消除歧义并避免混淆，应给单证中的代码一个标准位置。
ＩＳＯ８４４０依据联合国欧洲经济委员会（ＵＮ／ＥＣＥ）国际贸易程序简化工作组所采用的推荐性标准。
